Tiger Helicopters continues to be great supporter of the Shobdon Food and Flying Festival. In 2018, they are kindly sponsoring our Food Marquee which will house some of the best producers Herefordshire and the surrounding areas have to offer.
Owned and run by Alan Ramsden, Tiger Helicopters has been based at Shobdon Airfield since it was established in 1992. Alan has spent all of his working life at the airfield and started flying at Shobdon in 1977.
Originally established as a helicopter flight training school, Tiger Aviation was introduced to provide both helicopter and fixed wing professional training courses. Initially the school catered for Ab initio PPL (H) training, through to commercial pilot training on the R22 type helicopter. As the company fleet expanded over the next ten years, further training elements were added that included helicopter single and twin turbine type conversions, and instrument flight training. The company also works closely with Diamond Aircraft to offer an excellent training platform for Ab initio Fixed Wing courses all the way up to Airline Transport Pilot Qualification for their candidates.
Shobdon offers an excellent runway that allows training to start immediately without excessive time wasting which occurs at many busy airports. The company established itself internationally in 2005, when it gained a contract to train 16 police pilots for the government of Kuwait. Since the company’s inception many hundreds of students from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Nepal, Algeria and now Nigeria, have successfully completed a range of flight courses at Shobdon Aerodrome.
In 2010 the company helped to complete the selection and approval process to be the Ab Initio Training provider of choice for AgustaWestland. On behalf of AgustaWestland, Tiger Aviation has helped to train 70 police officers who all graduated in 2012. Tiger Aviation recently developed, and delivered, a Civil Training Programme for senior Nigerian Air Force Flight Officers to help with the increased role of search & rescue and off shore operations now required of the NAF. They currently have an available fleet of 14 Robinson R22 helicopters to ensure continuous availability during intensive training operations. We also have an available fleet of 10 Bell 206 Jet Rangers which are used for the advanced turbine courses offered.
Over the Festival weekend, Tiger will be offering introductory flights in both the R22 and the Jetranger to members of the public. Learn more about the lessons here.
